It is relatively common this resource: as a tutorial, to offer the player sequences of action and exploration without being artificially crowded at the beginning of the game and when the characters are still being introduced, we resort either to action flashbacks or to control other characters. This is the case of Abby, whose intentions we do not know, and certainly we can not suspect that it will be the person who, shortly thereafter, murder Joel in the presence of Ellie.

My qualms start from this very approach: not only is it not particularly original, but it diffuses the tension in an extraordinary way. The game lasts twice as long as the original (25 hours, something extraordinary for a title of this type) due to this decision to also double the point of view. But it entails that the evolution of Ellie’s character is much more neglected, since we lose sight of her during the many hours in which we control Abby.

But for that resource to work (hell, it worked back in the days of Cain and Abel and Beowulf) we have to stay very close to who is experiencing that desire, so that it’s not obvious that it’s a schematic and somewhat cheating storytelling trick. That is, to make it clear to us that the character has not had a chance to think twice that his blind sense of vengeance is senseless or unjustified. You have to turn him into a beast with nothing else in his head, and that’s why ‘Woman’s Day’, ‘Death Wish’ or the first ‘Max Payne’ work: there’s nothing else in the aggrieved’s thoughts but the culmination of revenge (and that’s also why they are partially tragic characters: they are empty when they carry it out).

We analyze in detail The Last of Us part II, the most ambitious and shocking game of Naughty Dog with which it overcomes again. An amazing action adventure with a story as heartbreaking as it is unforgettable.

The Last of Us Part II takes place shortly after the events of the first game, with Joel and Ellie living in a stable community of survivors, where they have finally found some peace in this ruthless post-apocalyptic world. Violence begets violence, and their brutal acts will haunt them, initiating a bloody story of revenge, which speaks, among many other things, of how hatred can destroy people.

In addition to a multitude of documents that give us more information about its exciting world and reinforce the narrative, there are certain collectibles that are just that, collectibles, and that do not paint too much with the tone of the game.

The Last of Us Part II is one of those games that move the medium forward, raising the quality standards of what we should expect from a triple A, especially in the narrative, really shocking, which fits perfectly with an excellent gameplay proposal and an exceptional audiovisual section. What we can say is that the story of that character, the Ellie presented in ‘The Last of Us Part II’ is much darker, ambiguous and amoral than the first installment. The leap she has made as a character is impressive and, in general, the terrible personal journey she has to go through is what makes this game a more risky and macabre title than its acclaimed precedent. And perhaps for that very reason it is called to be much more underrated.

Once played, we can affirm that Naughty Dog has not settled for a mere continuation of the first game. Of course, this is not an indie game, much less an experimental product. But the truth is that ‘The Last of Us Part II’ is the biggest leap into the void that the studio has taken in its entire career: perhaps the word that best defines the game is “unfriendly” -which is not necessarily a negative aspect, quite the contrary-, something surprising coming from the creators of one of the most charismatic and lovable characters in the medium, Nathan Drake from ‘Uncharted’.
