Editor’s note: While this article is not about the game experience per se, it focuses on how you are rewarded for taking the time to play and what might motivate you to play each mode during an event.

League of Legends events will change from the release of the next patch 11.24. After constant criticism from the community due to the high time demand required to unlock the rewards in these celebrations organized by Riot Games, the developer has finally taken measures to optimize the time needed to achieve the objectives. Thus, both event pass holders and free players will see their efforts rewarded in fairer ways.

Riot Games’ major modifications are related to the way in which game time will be rewarded. The developer has confirmed that from now on it will no longer be required to win a certain amount of games to complete missions, but rather minutes of gameplay in any game mode will be required. Thus, instead of having to play 30 games of indeterminate duration, we will have to accumulate 4500 points obtained at a rate of between 4 (in defeats) and 6 (in victories) per minute of play.

How do we know if we meet that goal? One of the main filters we use is data comparing the number of people who have a favorite champion and bought an aspect to the number of people who played that champion occasionally and bought an aspect. In the following graph, the ”high play rate accounts” refer to those who have a favorite champion and the ”low play rate accounts” refer to people who play occasionally with a champion. By gathering all this information, our aspect teams conduct an interdisciplinary review of what they believe could be improved going forward or discuss the key elements that might have contributed to the success or failure of the aspect. All of these hypotheses are then ready to be implemented into new aspects as part of a never-ending cycle of creation, iteration, feedback and improvement.
